Bags of this design were made for travel. They could fold up efficiently for packing or be hung on the wall as pockets when not traveling. The bag is similar in idea to the traveling toiletry bags of today. This multi-purpose bag carried an assortment of things such as needlework, tools, and other required things. George Johnston, a Tlingit entrepreneur and photographer, used his as a sewing bag. Threads, needles and pins were kept in the large pockets of the bag.
